A sleeper hit at the box office, the film is a "healthy sign" for the romantic comedy genre and other mid-budget Hollywood flicks, said Scott Meslow, author of "From Hollywood With Love: The Rise and Fall (and Rise Again) of the Romantic Comedy." In the seven weeks since, the romantic comedy has tallied $170 million globally, including $80 million from domestic theaters, according to data from Comscore. Between 2004 and 2010, Hollywood consistently released between 15 and 25 romantic comedy or romance films each year. Meslow said there was no rom-com "kill shot," a film or series of films that sparked the decline in theatrical releases of the genre. While some films will still be released only on streaming platforms, Hollywood has rediscovered the importance of theatrical as part of overall downstream revenue.

"Anyone but You" incorporates direct quotes from "Much Ado About Nothing." Brook Rushton/SonyIt wasn't marketed as such, but 2023's "Anyone but You" is a relatively straightforward adaptation of "Much Ado About Nothing," Shakespeare's comedy about scheming and falling in love. The main characters are named Ben (Glen Powell) and Bea (Sydney Sweeney) after Benedick and Beatrice from the play. That line is from the first scene of "Much Ado About Nothing" and spoken by Don Pedro. In the film, Don Pedro is turned into Pete, Ben's best friend.

It has to do with “Hit Man,” a comedy Powell co-wrote with the director Richard Linklater that casts him as a hapless teacher who must pose as an assassin for hire. I first saw it at the Venice Film Festival in September, where it proved so crowd-pleasing that the audience broke into applause midway through the movie. A week later at the Toronto International Film Festival, the response was also through the roof. But for months, Powell had only heard about all that secondhand. Since the Screen Actors Guild strike was still going strong during the fall tests, Powell wasn’t able to attend a premiere of “Hit Man” until it played Monday night at the Sundance Film Festival.

It has made over $80 million worldwide and proven big studio rom-coms can still find audiences. In December, he welcomed the audience at the New York City premiere to "the last romantic comedy to be made by a Hollywood studio." Its remarkable performance proves the studio rom-com is built for a comeback. SonyThe rom-com should make its move now in the wake of superhero burnout"Anyone but You" certainly isn't the first studio rom-com to find box-office glory in the last few years. So, for now, fans of the genre must wait and see if Hollywood will move forward with more romantic comedies.

Hot Chat 3000 is a dating website where AI determines your "hotness" using huge datasets. When a user enters Hot Chat 3000, they're asked to upload a picture of themselves as electronic music hums in the background. "Hot Chat 3000 very deliberately sets out to expose, visualize, exacerbate these biases," the site says. Which is to say that no one should take their Hot Chat 3000 "hotness" score seriously. There are no names in the world of Hot Chat 3000; instead, everyone is identified by their score.
Rumors of a possible romance between the actors Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell swirled online this week after a series of seemingly flirtatious moments catapulted them into the spotlight. The public interest in Ms. Sweeney and Mr. Powell may be heightened because they’re both romantically linked to other people. Ms. Sweeney, best known for her roles in “Euphoria” and “White Lotus,” is engaged to Jonathan Davino, a restaurateur, but has rarely publicly discussed her relationship. “I don’t date people in the spotlight,” she told Cosmopolitan last year. Mr. Powell, who starred in “Top Gun: Maverick,” was reported to be dating the model Gigi Paris.
